There is absolutely no doubt that laptops have become more popular over the years, but they’re still very delicate devices with lots of moving parts. The good news? Learning how to fix a laptop and the laptop repairs themselves aren’t as difficult or expensive as fixing an iPhone (or even fixing a Mac or screenshotting on a Mac). The bad news? They can be pretty pricey if something goes wrong.

If you don’t want to pay for a repair shop — or worse yet, wait weeks for tech support to resolve issues on their own — then there are some basic things you need to know about taking care of your machine properly.

Before we get into specific fixes, let me just say this: Never put anything sharp in your computer! I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that people regularly cut themselves while opening up their laptops because they weren’t aware of where all the pins were located inside. You might think “well my laptop isn’t like a knife,” but trust me, it could happen at any time. Also, never stick your hands near live wires, connectors, ports, etc., as these areas are hot enough to cause third degree burns. Make sure everything else around you is off before plugging your charger in to avoid frying yourself.

How to fix a laptop properly

With those safety concerns out of the way, here are some tips on maintaining your laptop so that it runs smoothly for many years to come. Clean dust bunnies away from fans and vents This one is probably obvious…but it needs to be said. It’s important to keep your laptop ventilated by cleaning the dust bunnies that form behind the keyboard and fan area on most modern machines. Not only does it help keep components cool, but it also prevents them from overheating which can lead to permanent damage. This means keeping your desktop clean and free of crumbs too. A small vacuum cleaner attachment will work great for both tasks.

Take extra caution when removing stickers/stickers peel-off tape. Removing stickers and sticker peels can easily lead to broken screens. In addition to being careful during removal, make sure you use proper tools when doing so. For example, a paperclip won’t suffice; you’ll definitely need a plastic card scraper or similar tool. Similarly, making holes with sticky tapes can leave scars on your screen. Avoid using household cleaners since they may contain corrosive chemicals that can permanently harm your screen. Instead, opt for specialized adhesive removers such as Screen Remover 101 available online.

Avoid putting hair straighteners directly against metal surfaces. Straightening your hair can be tricky business, especially when trying to reach every nook and corner of your head. However, pulling hairdryers across your laptop display can ruin its surface. To prevent this type of accident, make sure you place your dryer far away from your monitor. Otherwise, you risk damaging your screen. Don’t forget about your stylist either; he or she likely has a few tricks up his sleeve for creating professional styles without harming your laptop.

Always remove USB chargers before closing the lid

If you haven’t done so already, now would be a good time to unplug any external accessories plugged into your laptop. Then close the laptop’s lid until the LED indicator light turns off indicating charging is complete. Once you open your laptop again, immediately disconnect power strips and other peripherals to avoid electrical shocks. Finally, always turn off your phone first before shutting down your laptop. Use anti-static wrist straps whenever possible

It shouldn’t really require explanation, but I feel compelled to remind everyone who reads this article that static electricity poses serious threats to electronic equipment. While most gadgets won’t explode due to static shock alone, prolonged exposure to high voltage levels can result in damaged circuits, dead batteries, and malfunctioning hardware. As such, try to stay grounded wherever possible. Wrist bands are particularly useful, although they tend to impede typing somewhat.

Anti-static bags, clothing, shoes, blankets, and mats are all effective ways to ground yourself. And yes, touching a wire with bare fingers causes static charges. Always wear rubber gloves when working with electronics.

Keep cords organized

You may be asking — what do you cords have to do with how to fix a laptop? Cords may seem insignificant compared to larger items like monitors, keyboards, speakers, etc., but they pose a real threat to your laptop. Think about it — when was the last time you saw someone carrying dozens of cables around everywhere? Most people usually organize their cords neatly underneath desktops and end tables, but it’s vital to remember that they can still tangle under desks and bed frames alike.

Furthermore, having multiple cords running throughout your home increases the chances of tripping over them. Cords should therefore be kept within easy reach, preferably in designated cable management pockets. Alternatively, buy special cases designed specifically for storing and organizing wired gear.

Don’t sleep with your laptop

As mentioned above, laptops are sensitive pieces of technology that generate heat when in operation. Excessive heat can shorten battery life and reduce performance, potentially leading to crashes and system freezes. When sleeping, shut down your PC completely and set your alarm clock to wake you up several hours later instead.

Keep your room temperature low and ensure air flow remains unobstructed by heavy curtains or furniture. Turn off lights and computers whenever possible. Use space heating systems rather than electric stoves to cook food and beverages. Lastly, try not to drink cold drinks right after waking up in order to give your body enough time to warm itself up gradually.
