If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my lifetime, it’s this — everyone has their own sense of humor (or lack thereof). And even if they do seem to “get” what we say at times, most people won’t necessarily find any particular comment all that amusing. Why? Because our brains evolved in such a way as to filter out unnecessary noise like jokes. Or perhaps simply because we were never taught how to be funny or tell a joke Whatever the case may be for why many people aren’t very skilled at cracking jokes, trying too hard will only annoy others and possibly cause them to shut down completely.

So what should we do instead? The best advice I can give you when it comes to becoming funnier is to learn how to use comedy naturally without forcing it upon others. Just relax and keep things lighthearted. Don’t try to force something stupid into saying, especially if you know it isn’t going to work. Instead, focus on having fun while sharing your ideas. As long as you’re sincere and genuine, people might actually enjoy hearing what you have to say!

But before you go off telling knock-knock jokes or other types of corny jokes, remember that you must also take care not to offend anyone by doing so. After all, no matter who else likes those kinds of jokes, someone out there probably doesn’t! So always consider whether or not your jokes would be appropriate for both younger folks and older ones alike. Otherwise, you could end up offending either group unintentionally.
Also realize that you needn’t be overly serious all the time. In fact, sometimes it helps to break away from that mindset occasionally and let loose once in awhile. This makes people feel less intimidated around you and allows you to show them that you really have a sense of humor after all.

And finally, don’t forget to use wit wisely. There’s nothing wrong with using irony or sarcasm at times, but you shouldn’t rely solely on these tools to get across your point. For example, maybe you want to ask your friend out on Saturday night and he replies, “Sure, whatever,” yet he means “no thanks.” Using sarcasm alone wouldn’t convey enough meaning to him unless you follow it up with another sentence explaining his real intention behind his response. On top of that, if you happen to notice later that he was already planning to attend said event anyway, then you’d likely look pretty foolish by taking advantage of his perceived disinterest.

Here are three additional tips on how to be funny:

1) Be creative. One tip I often hear online is to come up with different ways to illustrate a concept. A great example is if you’re talking about buying new furniture for your home and someone asks you where you plan to put your new flat screen TV. To which you reply, “Oh right next to the couch!” How original is that? But imagine if you had thought of placing the television under the bed frame since this happens to be what the current owner does currently. Now that’s creativity! People love unique perspectives and ideas and coming up with them shows initiative plus imagination. Plus it adds spice to conversations that otherwise would sound boring.

2) Use props whenever possible. When you speak, gestures play an important role in conveying meanings. However, if you don’t have anything handy to help demonstrate a certain point, adding a few simple props can help immensely. Try grabbing your phone and pretending to dial numbers. Pointing to the ceiling and yelling, “Help me God!” is better than raising your arms heavenward and screaming normally. Also, putting on sunglasses indoors during winter months is quite comical and gives off the impression that you’re high on drugs. Finally, walking barefoot inside is funny for obvious reasons. Not everyone knows this though, so if you see someone wearing flip flops outside, just walk past casually with your shoes dangling loosely underneath them. They’ll definitely get the hint.

3) Keep calm and collected at all times. Even if you aren’t sure what’s happening or what the outcome ends up being, maintaining composure works wonders. No one wants to deal with hysterical individuals.
With this last bit of wisdom, I close today’s article. Hopefully now you understand that you don’t have to be a standup comic or an actor to be able to create humorous moments with friends. All it takes is to relax and keep things interesting. Most importantly, avoid trying too hard and just have fun to know how to be funny! Let your personality shine through and remember — laughter truly is the best medicine.
